How to Care for Colour-Treated Hair Between Appointments
In short
- For the first 2–3 days after colouring, hold off on washing: the colour needs time to set.
- Use a shampoo for colour-treated hair and lukewarm, not hot, water.
- Protect your hair from heat (straighteners, dryers) and from the sun.
- Roots usually need a refresh every 4–6 weeks, balayage every few months.
A beautiful colour doesn’t end when I close my kit. How you care for your hair in the weeks after matters almost as much as the colouring itself: it decides how long the shade stays vibrant and how healthy your hair looks until the next appointment.
The first days after colouring
In the first 2–3 days, the colour is still setting into the hair. If you can, hold off on washing during this time and avoid pools, saunas and strong heat. After that, you can care for your hair as usual, following the tips below.
Shampoo, water and temperature: what really matters
- Shampoo for colour-treated hair. It’s gentler and strips less pigment with each wash.
- Lukewarm, not hot, water. Hot water opens the hair cuticle and the colour fades faster.
- Wash less often. If you wash daily, try every other day; the colour will last noticeably longer.
- Conditioner every wash and a moisturising mask once a week. Coloured hair needs more hydration.
Heat and sun
Straighteners, curling irons and hot dryers gradually fade the shade. Use a heat-protection spray every time and, where possible, a medium temperature. In summer, the sun and pool or sea water have the same effect, so a hat and a UV-protection hair product help a lot.
Blonde and bleached hair: extra care
Blonde or bleached hair is more delicate. A purple toning shampoo, used once a week, keeps yellow tones in check, and a moisturising mask becomes a must. You’ll find more details in the guide to platinum blonde maintenance.
When to refresh your colour
- Root colour: usually every 4–6 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows and how big the difference in shade is.
- Balayage: every few months. Because it doesn’t leave a hard line at the roots, it grows out beautifully and doesn’t need frequent touch-ups.
Root colour costs 215 lei, and balayage 530 lei for medium hair and 620 lei for long hair, with travel included within the coverage area. If four friends get their roots coloured at the same address on the same day, the Girlfriends Deal applies. For the full process, step by step, see the guide to hair coloring and balayage at home.
Common mistakes
- Washing right after colouring.
- Very hot water and daily washing.
- Using a straightener without heat protection.
- Box dyes applied between appointments: they change the colour and can complicate the next colouring. If you have used one, tell me before the appointment.
